Wide Open Walls
Since 2016, Wide Open Walls, a non-profit organization promoting and celebrating public art, has helped create more than 80 permanent works and nearly 250 temporary works that have illustrated the streets of Sacramento. The events have enabled local artists, as well as US and international talent, to makeover what would normally be plain building walls into amazing works of art.
The celebration of art has promoted diversity through artistic expression and given locals and visitors alike some awesome murals to enjoy. Whether you spot one enjoying a bike ride through Midtown, notice a mural while dining at your favorite restaurant, or use their tour routing tool to identify and route your own custom exhibition, you’ll inevitably be left awestruck.
The murals vary in size and message. This 15 story mural, painted by famed street artist Shepard Fairey, commemorates the 50 year anniversary of Johnny Cash’s iconic live show at Folsom State Prison. More importantly though, it brings to light the call for prisoner right’s and reform. In contrast to domestic issues, artist Shamsia Hassani's, an Iranian-born woman, illustrates a woman character bringing a voice, pride, and the ability to make positive changes to other’s lives.
